ALZHEIMER'S DISEASE

Recent and determining scientific discoveries

Alzeimer's disease in short

Agelessman

1999-2000 (1)

Nervous cells in culture treated by testosterone secrete less amyloidogenic peptides.

Conclusion of this study: androgens could be a protection against the development of Alzheimer's disease (1).

2001 (2)

The first clinical description of the increase in the blood of the β-amyloid protein rate was published in 2001 by a research team of the University of Western Australia in Perth (2). They showed that chemical castration causes the collapse of the plasmatic oestradiol and testosterone rate in man in parallel to the rise in the β-amyloid-protein.

Chemical Andropause and Amyloid- β-Peptide
(JAMA.
2001;285:2195-2196)

Andropause, Alzheimer et peptide amyloïde B

Figure. Plasma Concentrations of Amyloid-beta Peptide (Abeta), Testosterone, and 17beta-Estradiol From 6 Men With Adenocarcinoma of the Prostate. Plasma concentrations were determined serially on samples drawn 1 week prior to initiating treatment with flutamide and leuprorelin acetate and on weeks 4, 12, and 24.

Conclusion of this study: the hormonal replacement can prevent or delay Alzheimer's disease in man with andropause.

2004 (3)

In 2004 researchers of the University of Southern California studied the testosterone content of brains in deceased.men. Two groups were studied.
The first group did not present any neuropathologic anomaly (control group).
The second group presented an Alzheimer's disease or moderate neuropathologic troubles

Conclusion of this study: the cerebral tissue of patients with Alzheimer's disease significantly contains less testosterone than cerebral tissue of men not presenting a neurophysiological anomaly (3)

2006 (4)

A clinical study was made during two years by the researchers of  the Department of Neurology, David Geffen School of Medicine, University of California, Los Angeles, the USA. by a double blind study on 16 men presenting an Alzheimer's disease compared to 22 men without neurological problems, all treated by testosterone.

Conclusion of this study: the quality of life of the men presenting an Alzheimer's disease treated by testosterone was improved in general. The testosterone had a minimal effect on cognition (4)

2008 (5)

Emily R. Rosario et Christian J. Pike from the  Davis School of Gerontology, University of Southern California, Los Angeles, CA 90089 USA publish a revue of scientific publications on Alzheimer's disease.. Download pdf. (5)

Conclusions of this revue :

  • Alzheimer's disease shows an abnormal accumulation of amyloid protein β in the brain.

  • Recent studies suggest the regulating action androgens on the amyloid protein β and on development of Alzheimer's disease.

  • Therapy with androgens can be planned to prevent and treat Alzheimer's disease.

2011 (6)

An article of American Academy of Family Physicians raises contradictions of the treatment of Alzheimer's disease with testosterone (6).

2015 - 2016 (8)

Androgen Deprivation Therapy as treatment for prostate cancer increases the Future Alzheimer’s Disease Risk (8)

Bibliography

A drug can only reach the diseased areas of the brain if the cerebral arteries are permeable.

Therefore, in order for natural molecules such as hormones or drug molecules to reach the brain cells, it is essential to first keep the cerebral arteries healthy.
